If parents or carers wish to request a change to their child's current nursery hours from 15 hours to 30, a formal request needs to be made by sending an email to nursery@thorpe.leeds.sch.uk

Nursery staff
In Nursery, the teachers are Mrs Nichols and Miss Stephenson. We are supported by Mrs Hudson.
In Nursery, we will be building the foundations for your child’s learning and supporting them to develop the skills and confidence they need to become ‘school ready’. Through exciting, purposeful provision and adult-led sessions, children will explore all 17 areas of the EYFS curriculum. Our carefully planned curriculum is inclusive, inspiring and responsive to the needs of our children and the local community.
Learning through play is at the heart of our Nursery curriculum. We believe that meaningful, playful experiences are essential for supporting children’s development across all areas of learning, helping them to grow in confidence, independence and curiosity.
Below, you will find an overview of our learning for this half term.
Current Class book
I am a good communicator and a reader
In Autumn 1 we will be looking at 'We're going on a bear hunt'. This story is linked to our autumnal theme in science and also dives into learning about characters and settings as an early reading skill. We will be looking at emotions through this story, family connections and local wildlife. We will learn the story through a visual story map and begin to understand the vocabulary really well, orally rehearsing the story and learning it from memory.
We will also read a range of high quality texts, discuss new vocabulary such as names of things/places, describe settings/characters and also draw on the children’s life experiences so far such as discussing what they like and don’t like and what they’d like to be when they grow up. We teach the children what an author and illustrator does and about the orientation of books.
I am a respectful citizen
Through circle times, children will begin to notice similarities and differences between themselves and their classmates. We will celebrate what makes us unique and explore our individual strengths and special skills.
We will begin by looking at families and sharing family photographs, discussing similarities, differences and significant events. We will also explore different jobs in our community and talk about our aspirations, learning about inspirational people such as police officers, nurses, firefighters and dentists.
I am a creator
In music, we will explore a range of instruments and begin to develop our understanding of pitch and dynamics. Children will experiment with different sounds and notice how these vary between instruments.
Adults will model how to use construction materials, such as bricks and Duplo, to design and build different structures, including houses. Children will also explore colours by naming, sorting and matching them using a variety of resources, including paint, pens and crayons.
I am a historian and geographer
We will begin to notice the changes that take place during autumn and talk about our observations. During an autumn walk, we will collect natural objects and take photographs, learning how to explore and care for our environment respectfully.
In science, children will explore their senses and use them to investigate and describe different materials and natural objects. They will have opportunities to look closely at their discoveries, noticing different textures, colours, sounds and other features.
During Space Week, we will learn about inspirational figures Mae Jemison and Neil Armstrong, discovering more about their lives and achievements in space exploration.
I am a sportsperson and writer
Children will have lots of opportunities to make marks using a variety of tools and materials, helping them to develop control and confidence. Through our Scribble Club activities, adults will join children in playful mark-making experiences, encouraging them to explore different movements and develop the fine motor skills needed for early writing.
I am a mathematician
We will begin the half term by enjoying familiar number songs, such as Five Little Ducks and Three Blind Mice, to develop children's confidence with numbers and counting. We will then explore colours through activities involving naming, matching and sorting before beginning to investigate the number one in different forms and representations.

We will record your child's learning through our online journal system called 'Tapestry'. On here you will find a weekly blog and any 'WOW' moments your child experiences in nursery.
